Rep. Ellison and NLIHC CEO Yentel Call Attention to Out-of-Reach Rents and Urge Common Sense Solutions

In the July 6 issue of The Hill, Representative Keith Ellison (D-MN) and NLIHC President and CEO Diane Yentel authored an op-ed, “The Affordable Housing Crisis and its Connection to the Gap between Wages and Rent,” that featured the results of NLIHC’s 2017 Out of Reach: The High Cost of Housing report to show why President Trump’s budget proposal to gut federal affordable housing programs is so shortsighted and cruel.

Mr. Ellison and Ms. Yentel call for modest reforms to the mortgage interest deduction, an expensive tax subsidy that goes principally to higher income households, and for reinvesting the savings in affordable housing solutions for those with the lowest incomes in America.  These reforms are detailed in Mr. Ellison’s “Common Sense Housing Investment Act” (H.R. 948) and in the NLIHC-led United for Homes campaign.

Please read the op-ed and share it widely to show your support for ending homelessness and housing poverty in America.
